Glass House in Vilnius
In a beautiful green Lithuanian town of Pavilnys located in the park a few kilometers away from Vilnius, the country’s capital town, the banker and philanthropist purchased a piece of land for building a modern Glass House. Fragments of building of the second half of the 19th century once a part of the former foundry were located in the centre of this land. The new owner had an idea not to demolish the old building and decided to use it as part of the architectural solution for a modern villa. This idea was strongly supported by young architects from the Bureau G. Natkevicius & Partners. After a thorough cleaning the walls of an old house they discovered the brick masonry of amazing quality. This event led to a final decision to use the old building as an element of internal composition of the Glass House.

First of all, an old foundation has been preserved together with the basement of the building. According to the plan of an architect the basement levels will house a double garage, sauna, Turkish bath and a room with all utilities of the house. Also, storage of rare books was designed in this part of the Glass House due to the occupation of the present owner of the elite mansion who was a collector.

The originality of the decision of the architectural Bureau G. Natkevicius & Partners was the following. The old building looked as if it was «dressed» in a modern building shell built in the «high tech» style. The total volume of the new mansion was more than 1500 square meters. Such modern materials as steel, tinted thermal glass, natural marble, granite have been used for building shell.

The first floor of the Glass House the kitchen, living room and children’s rooms. The existence of outside glass walls creates an illusion of open space. Architects have skillfully used the topography of the area and a park adjacent to the villa to create an illusion of a full fusion of the living space of the house and the natural outdoor environment. There are no interior partition walls in the new house, the master’s bedroom is hidden inside the building, a living room, dining room and other public spaces are placed around the perimeter.

The elliptical shape staircase leads to the second floor. This form provides a kind of counterbalance to strict cubic shape of the outer shell. A staircase leads to the attic of the old building where the large master’s bedroom is located.
